Our good health is being tested in numerous ways, and we need to do everything within our power to maintain our homeostasis – our natural healthy and balanced metabolism.
Research has shown that there is no perfect eating program that fits everyone. If you believe that we are all unique, then that becomes an obvious statement. Scientists have also realized that what we eat affects our individual metabolism (microbiome), and that it can alter our DNA.
We need to monitor our response to our eating program and customize it to optimize its benefits. Ask me for more information on this at your next appointment.
In addition to those choices, we all need a complex group of vitamins and minerals to support our optimum health. Due to the current situation, we are most interested in those more specific to supporting and enhancing our immune system.
Briefly, they include vitamins A, B complex, C, and D3, supported by the mineral Zinc. Combined with a complete, good quality protein, and a healthy digestive system, our bodies will synthesize what we need. Read on for more information on these important nutrients. The bottom line is that if we are healthy and have a strong immune system, our chances of contracting the Covid virus, or a cold or the flu is drastically reduced. If we support our health with physical distancing, frequent and thorough hand washing (“Healthy birthday to me” sang twice will work), and wearing a proper mask when appropriate, we will reduce our risk factor.
A study that was published in a very reputable health magazine in the early 1990’s reported on research about the probability of consuming all the nutrients our body requires through our eating program. Health conscious people recorded their intake over a set period, keeping a recording of every morsel. Their food journals were then analysed by certified nutritionists, and it demonstrated that all the eating programs were inadequate to maintain good health. That was three decades ago – unfortunately, things have not improved.
Due to the ongoing insults to our environment, our food supply chain is broken. Unless we are growing our own organic produce in remediated soil, we need supplementation to fill the gaps. Have a look at the Landmark Study www.landmarkstudy.com. Let us start with the basics.
Vitamin A is primarily a fat-soluble vitamin found in butter, calf liver and fish oils, green and yellow vegetables. Research has shown that Beta Carotene is a safer way of obtaining our vitamin A. It supports our immune system and increases our resistance to respiratory disorders. It is especially important for women taking oral contraceptives. Also, see zinc below.
Vitamin B-complex, a water-soluble vitamin, consists of a group of eight different nutrients that work in a harmonious and supportive (synergistic) manner. To be effective, they must be in the same balance as they are found in Nature. Dr. Shaklee knew that and formulated his B-complex accordingly. Individually they each have a role in health support although they should only be taken separately under supervision. A few of their benefits include reduction of anxiety and depression (both suppress our immune system), assist our digestion, improve recovery from surgery, and improve sleep patterns. Alcohol, caffeine, and sugar consumption can deplete their effectiveness.
Vitamin C, known as the “universal vitamin” is amazing. It is water-soluble, and sadly, not synthesized by humans. We must obtain it through our food or supplement intake. Many fruits, including citrus, and vegetables are a natural source. Improved immune support is just one of the eighty other ailments that this powerful antioxidant helps prevent or heal.
Vitamin D, another fat-soluble vitamin, is not found in vegetable form. We acquire the natural form, D3, through exposure to sunlight or orally through fatty fish, milk, and food supplements. A deficiency of vitamin D has been linked to seventeen varieties of cancer, and healthy levels will promote a healthy immune response by enhancing our immune system. One of its co-factors is Zinc (Zn).
Zinc is a key mineral that influences the entire hormonal system. It is essential for the manufacture of over seventy enzymes – the chemicals that keep our bodies functioning in a normal manner. It is a definite immune booster, especially in response to infection. Wild ocean seafood is a good food source. Estrogen supplementation such as oral contraceptives increases zinc requirements, and it is essential for male prostate health. White spots in your finger nails can signal a zinc deficiency.
Acupuncture is highly effective at balancing our metabolism, bolstering our immune system, and as a result helps us resist viral infections. My clinic is operating under pandemic protocols designated by the Ministry of Health. You can find the guidelines on this page at my website. Hallowe’en will be different this year, but I am offering a treat. Everyone who books in October and November will have their name entered in a draw for a prize with each appointment. I hope to see you soon.
Good health,
